THE FIRST LOVE AN AFGHAN DAY

The Internet Afghan Hound Club decided that they would like to raise money for Afghan Rescue. A name was chosen; Love An Afghan Day and it was to be run on similar lines to Red Nose Day.

We covered the whole country. Our aim was to involve as many people as possible, not only to raise money but also to make people more aware of rescue and to have fun at the same time. We set the date for Monday 27th August but obviously not all fund raising events took place on that day. Pam Croft designed a web page and Jan Fielder produced a wonderful logo.

We held an online auction which included plants, books, Laser Lite brush, tapestry, painting, Beanie toys, Afghan models, a set of old Southern magazines ( these were very popular ) and last but by no means least, Sue and Barry Hedge donated a weeks stay in their villa at Alicante. This was auctioned at the Western Championship show and the successful bidder was Mr. Clay from Essex with a bid of £ 200. Karen and Anouska Simpson, along with Julie Johnson held an Exemption Show at Leeds and raised £ 139.57. Another Exemption show was held at Bristol by Jan & Tim Fielder, Chris & Bob Yates, Val & Bob Buckland and Wendy & Mike Durrant this raised £ 400. Val Peirce donated some lovely rosettes. Other events included car boot sales, white elephant stall and a raffle. Bob Savage won the first prize of £ 200.

Mr. Timbrell won second prize of £100 from Glos. And third prize of £ 50 went to Mr. O'Donnell from Scotland. If there was an award for sales women of the decade it would go to Vanessa Small, she sold an amazing number of raffle tickets, our warmest thanks Vanessa.

All the money raised is to be divided equally between the Breed Club Rescue Schemes. At the moment we have nearly £ 3,000.00 in the account and a pledge of £ 2,000.00 from Denise Boardman ( Women Empowering Women ) which should be with us soon. All being well the final balance will be a little over £ 5,000.00. We hope to run another Love An Afghan Day in 2003 so get your thinking caps on!

The response from everyone has been overwhelming, it has pulled us all together and many of you have offered to help with home checks, transport, foster homes etc. You have proved that there are many of you who care passionately about the well being of Afghan Hounds who through no fault of their own are faced with difficult and confusing circumstances. To help them through this transition and into a new caring home where they will be wanted and loved is what they undoubtedly deserve.

We would like to thank you all for your support, donations, pledges and hard work. You are all stars.

A total of £ 3,503.67 was raised for LAAD. I'm afraid we never did get the £2000 promised to us by Denise Boardman (WEW) we received the original pledge of £ 250 from her.
We wrote to all the Breed Clubs to ask them if they would like a share of the money for their rescue schemes and 7 elected to receive money from the fund. The A.H.A. North Eastern, Northern, East of England, Southern, Western and Scottish Rescue all received £ 430 each. We also made a donation of £ 100 together with the Western, Southern and East of England to help rescue 2 youngsters who were living in terrible conditions. This leaves a balance of £ 393.67 in the rescue account.
Thank you everyone for all your help and support, without you it couldn’t have happened.

The date for Love An Afghan Day has been set for Monday August 27th but obviously not all events need to be held on that day.  Some of the proposed plans include, sponsored walks, coffee mornings, car boot sale, snoods for sale, on line auction, pledges and exemption dog show. We will keep you posted as details arrive. As you can appreciate we need as many people as possible to pull together to raise as much money as we can for our beloved breed

Love An afghan day is to be run on similar lines to Red Nose Day and will cover the whole country.  All the money raised is for Afghan Rescue and the proceeds will be divided equally between the Breed Club Rescue Schemes. A bank account is being opened in the name of Afghan Hound Rescue and all cheques collected should be made out to that name. Two signatures will be required to withdraw any money from the account and bank statements will be made available to anyone who asks, it will also be shown on this site.
